Adjudicators' Remarks - The Pilgrim's Progress

Order of play: 12, Placing: 6th

Christopher Bond:

Clean to open, although blemishes do detract.
Var 1 - the music has energy and excitement but we lose clarity (particularly in semiquavers).
E - snare drum just isn't together unfortunately and this rather disrupts the flow and overall cohestion.
F is better!
Var 2 - some nice cresc. and dim. effects. Well done euph.
H - I could take a more blended, rounded sound here (especially cornets). Not quite settled before Var. 3.
Var 3 - opens with confidence but J isn't always completely together - quavers rush in melodic lines.
Var 4 - some nice effects. Good troms. I could take more accents from cornets/horns/baris/euphs.
L - good effort tuba. I miss the clarity of the triplet semis before M.
M through N has some exciting effects but can feel somewhat frantic in places - keep it all controlled.
Var 5 - well done solosits to open, although not completely secure. The music is all there but missing some of the required lilt to make it truly skip along in the way it should.
S - well done, sop!
Var 6 - has moments of unease where intonation is problematic but flug/horn play well.
Var 7 - keep ensemble really together as the tutti join. Well done cornet.
V - baritones just a little unsettled.
Var 8 - some nice efforts but we do miss the clarity of the semiquavers. Sop leads this section well.
A confident close, again not without its moments of intonation and balance to consider.
THANK YOU

John Maines:

Slips to start. and it is all very frantic at times.
E - F goes at a pace and loses detail.
Well done euph at G.
Intonation causes problems at H
Marcia could be more rhythmical to give it more character.
Well done Eb at L and troms do well.
N is dramatic and moves well.
Q-R flow along nicely.
S sop does well.
T flug/horn play well.
V a few intonation issues otherwise all goes along well.
Molto is a little nervy otherwise all is heard.
X good band sound moves to a convincing close. Thanks.
