Adjudicators' Remarks - The Aeronauts

Order of play: 9, Placing: 11th

Steve Pritchard-Jones:

Confident start but not always rhythmically clear.
2 untidy - not together. Unsteady tempo.
3 could do with more accent in cornets.
4 'mp'? Far too heavy. Good horns.
5 Restrained. 14/5 untidy bari/trom.
6 Good. 12/6 could be much lighter in style.
7 Good shape and warm sound.
8 Pleasing sound but not without slips.
9 Well done Sop. Warm sound and good shape. Controlled accel.
11 Too loud. Piu mosso! Melodic lines link well.
12 Could flow much more. 5/12 better here. 19/12 Not rhythmically convincing cornets.
13 Sensible tempo.
14 Well done flugel/horns. Accomp too loud. 26/14 Effective.
15 Music flows. Pauses not together.
16 Not quite together. Leads to convincing final few bars.
Final chord untidy in terms of intonation and cut off.
Overall a performance with some pleasing moments including confident solo work. Let down by intonation issues and pitch slips now and again. Listen to each other at all times to improve togetherness, intonation, and balance. Thank you!

Gary Davies:

Opening lacks detail.
2 good attempt cornet/euph.
3 Better, more detail. Well done troms/euph - watch tuning into 4.
4 12/8 more dynamic contrast please.
5 flows well but gets scrappy and at time forced.
6 Euph good sound better in the ensemble. Well controlled into 7.
7 Nice warm sounds
8 Feels a touch rushed and style is lost
9 Nice sop. Accel/molto rit works well
10 Flows well. Accel starts well, but there is no rall marked?
11 Semiquaver rhythm?
12 Has a nice lilt and works well. Very little detail is heard in the accel.
13 Again I could take more detail.
14 Slows down? But better detail is heard.
15 Better detail - just needs a bit more poise into 16.
16-end is much better. Good grandioso (last note?)
Overall - flowed well in places with some good ensemble sounds. However, the performance lacked detail and dynamic contrast in many places. I enjoyed the soloist contribution. Thank you.
