2015 Whit Friday Marches

Adjudicators' Remarks - March: Silver Badge

Scouthead - Jonathan Pippen:
Band Number 3: The Silver Badge
Contest points: 147
Placing: 52nd
The opening is a little frantic. Please don't rush the more difficult rhythms.
Good contrast of style in 'p'. Good cornets + sop before key change.
Key change brings intonation issues.
Troms/lower band a little more support in sound at 'ff' section. Cornets a bit 'out there' in semis at last repeat.
6/8 good contrast of style again.
Intonation doesn't really settle, tubas need to be bigger sounding to support the band sound. Tempo is spot on.

Scouthead deportment adjudication:
Uniform: 7.2
Is the general appearance smart/uniform? 7.5
Is the band in step? 6.8
Are the ranks straight? 7.1
Does the band maintain ranks on the march? 7.3
Do instruments appear clean/maintained? 7.9
Does the band maintain focus/discipline on the march? 8.2
Total score: 52.0
Comments: No ties on some band members

Denshaw - Allan Holdsworth:
Band Number 19: The Silver Badge
Contest points: 152
Placing: 47th
6/8 sound 2/4 fair start. Try a 'ten' on the crotchets gives 6/8 feel as required.
Balance not always in keeping. Alberti Bass theme heavy in sound/style.
Dynamics not too bad. Rhythmic pulse comes and goes.
The band sounds to have enjoyed their performance.
I am sure the band could have given a much better performance.

Delph - Mike Kilroy:
Band Number 30: The Silver Badge
Placing: 41st=
Tuning issues to start cause problems. Unison G's are not fully in tune.
Tempo is good and your dynamic contrast is reasonable.
Ensemble could be cleaner and you need to tighten this up.
Trio is well done (your best playing).
D.C. is quite clean but the issues remain.

Dobcross - Dr Robert Childs:
Band Number 53: The Silver Badge
Points: 73 Placing: 31st=
Thank you for a fine show.
The style was generally convincing and the fine solo contributions were appreciated.
Greater attention to accurate intonation and dynamic could however enhance future performances.
Many thanks

Diggle - Simon Kerwin:
Band Number 58: The Silver Badge
Contest points: 168
Placing: 31st
Opening - Nice selection of march. 6/8 march are difficult to master but you are doing well here. Good solid playing throughout. One or two wrong notes creep in but I expect it is because its cold and late.
Bass solo - solid bass line but the semis in SC are not always there.
Trio. Nice sounds here. I think some work could be done on balance here for better effect.
DC, Sounding good again, Try to make all crescendos even throughout the band.
Overall. A lot of potential, keep up working on the basics of dynamics, rhythms, ensemble playing, balance, detail and stamina.
Thanks for this evening and enjoy the rest of your night. Thanks also to the MD
