2014 National Brass Band Championship Finals

Adjudicators' Remarks - Symphony for Brass

Order of play: 8, Placing: 15th

John Winterflood:

Mov I: Dynamics a little heavy to open and some blemishes in the solo lines.
D not all of the quaver lines are dynamically balanced. Sop?
H we lose some dynamic detail here. Intonation to finish section is poor.

Mov II: A good attempt at shaping the phrases, but playing could be more delicate. Some minor intonation issues appear. Vivace - good tempo, although could have more quieter dynamic. Nice ending.

Mov III: Good opening if not a little loud.
O - nice ensemble.
R - well done good detail.
S - Good cornet ensemble.
V - not all together.

This performance did not really settle. It had much to merit but was marred by some blemishes and intonation issues. The style was not captured. Thank you.

Mike Kilroy:

1) Not the most confident start.
A+2 mp? < no dynamic contrast here.
C could be more delicate.
E Not together. Lack of concentration is costing you. Early entries and lack of care with ensemble (listening) contribute to a disappointing movement.

2) This needs more sensitivity. Dynamics are not observed and although the ensemble isn't too bad lack of contrast depletes the musical interest. Take more care of phrases

3) Lacks poise and the dynamics are not defined enough so the landscape is a tad bland for me. The balance could be better and we have individual voices sticking out of the mix at times.

Overall the M.D. must insist on observing all the dynamic markings to ensure that there is contrast and intent in the music. Also that style indicated in the score is replicated in the performance. Thanks
