Sorry it has taken me so long to put pen to paper, or should I say finger to keyboard...
Following the Wessex Brass Band Association Winter Contest In Poole at the beginning of December and the Williams Fairy Band concert in the evening, on the Sunday Williams Fairy held a master class.
This took place at Highcliffe School in Christchurch. I went with my daughter and we both thought it was a brilliant experience.
The two pieces we played were Punchinello by Rimmer and Poet and Peasant by Suppé. The music was sent in advance so that you can practise.
After registration and introduction there was a general rehearsal with the participants and the Williams Fairey Principle. There are participants of all ages and abilities so there is no need to feel that you are not good enough to attend as the object is to learn something. Speaking as a fairly mediocre player although I struggled with some of it I could play more at the end than I could at the beginning.
The sectional rehearsal with the Williams principle players was excellent, very down to earth people with no airs and graces who tried to get the best out of you.
The massed band concert at the end of the morning was quite an experience with the full Williams band and all the participants. Those bass players could generate some volume.
It was a good day out and I would recommend it to any brass players in the area.
There is another master class on the 29th April 2001.
