Wessex Brass Band Association Contest - Weymout 6/12/2003

Section 3. Test Piece : Impromptu (Eric Ball) - own choice. NFBB Result : 4th

"Hmm. Fourth place. Again. Must be our lucky(?) number." This quote was taken from our review of this same contest two years ago. Last year we also came fourth. Where did we come this year? Fourth. Again. What is it about coming fourth all the time? Being one place outside of the prizes is starting to lose its appeal.

Anyway, this year we had an early start to content with. We were the first band of the day and thus had to play at 9 o'clock in the morning. For me, this meant leaving the house at 0530 hrs - some others left even earlier. Not good.

Regardless of the final position, the band seemed to be fairly happy with our performance. If you've not had a chance to see them yet, here is the transcription:

Wessex 2003 winter contest Adjudiators comments A bold and majestic opening. Good balance but some inner band intonation problems. Try to hold all phrases to the very end. Lovely euphoniums from figure 3. The allegro has a really good feel and some very delicate playing from the whole band. Andante. Again some intonation problems and the semiquavers need more time please. Moderato. Some fine expressive playing here and all flows really well. Alla Marcia. Is a little untidy to start the fanfares, but then you settle to some tight ensembled playing with a most dramatic ending. Well done to the percussion! A fine performance for 9 o'clock in the morning. Very well rehearsed and so well directed - Thankyou. Bryan hurdley

I forgot to take any photos this time. So, unless someone comes up with any good ones, you'll have to imagine what we all looked like.
