Fareham Anglo Austro German Oktoberfest 20/10/2001

The nights are drawing in, leaves are falling off the trees, kids are throwing fireworks at each other - October must be here again. Thus, last night, the band made it's return trip to the Titchfield Oktoberfest. As anyone who's read the report of last years event will know, the Oktoberfest is a social gathering organised by the Fareham Anglo Austro German Society. Although perhaps not quite the size of the Munich version, the combination of live music, food and drink still seems to prove very popular.

From the band's point of view, the evening was notable for a number of reasons. Firstly, for the first time in a while, the band performed without any guest players. Although such help is always much appreciated, it's heartening to be in the position where we're not reliant on others. Secondly, this was the first public concert to feature a few of our more recent recruits - our horn section, in particular, is now sounding great. Last, but not least, with Jayne being unavailable, Ben Cull took the NFBB stick for the first time in public, doing a fine job.

The band played two spots. In the first, as the evening got under way, we played a general selection of light music. Andy Verner, our only soloist of the evening, put in a well received version of The Acrobat. This opening session finished with the playing of the Austrian, German and British national anthems. For the second spot, after opening with the March from Holst's Second Suite In F, a few more popular melodies were heard, before the customary German-style tunes got underway. A rousing joint finale of Hootenanny finished the evening for the band, with the Oompah band left to continue into the night.
